Barrier Islands Center – Machipongo, Virginia

Located in Machipongo, the Barrier Islands Center (BIC) is a cultural hub dedicated to telling the story of Virginia’s barrier islands and the people who called them home. The museum houses thousands of artifacts, photographs, and oral histories that bring to life the traditions of watermen, farmers, and families who once lived on the islands before storms and the sea forced their relocation.

Housed in a beautifully restored 1890s almshouse, the center also serves as a vibrant community gathering place, hosting concerts, lectures, workshops, and festivals that connect past and present. Visitors can explore permanent and rotating exhibits, enjoy the museum’s gardens, and shop locally inspired gifts at the center’s store.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Barrier Islands Center offers a meaningful glimpse into the heritage and resilience of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Best Time to Visit: Year-round, but spring and summer often feature special events, outdoor concerts, and family-friendly activities.
